I have a D710 (non-G), I run it with the body mounted in the trunk and a 3rd party separation cable (uses modified VGA 15 pin cable rather than separate cables for control head, speaker, mic) to the control head. The 710G has GPS in the control head; having a separate GPS may help if your mounting location has limited view of the sky for GPS signals. Another use for the 710 is cross-band; our club uses one for special event support allowing support ops to roam using HTs. I do the same thing if I think I need to move from car or the operating table.
